About Lasik Surgery

By Alberto Ziegenfuss

To improve your vision, and to rid yourself of contact lenses and eyeglasses which are cumbersome, it's better to undergo LASIK surgery. For the patient's eyes to adjust, they are asked not to use their contact lenses for a number of days. The doctors recommend a rest of three days for those using soft contact lenses, and three weeks for those using hard lenses. But to avoid accidents and the possibility of headaches, it is ok to wear glasses or contact lenses from time to time. In order not to irritate your eyes, you are asked not to wear makeup, lotions, colognes, perfumes and other products that can be considered irritants on the day of the surgical treatment.

For the patient not feel any pain or discomfort during the surgical procedure, an anesthetic is administered on the eyes. This will be done at the start of the treatment while seated on a reclining chair. During the whole surgical procedure or treatment, an eye spring will be positioned in your eyes by the doctor. This is to make sure that your eyes remain open.

Then, to make a very thin flap inside your cornea, the surgeon will use a small medical device known as microkeratome will be surgically placed. The surgical procedure may not hurt because of the anesthesia, but you will still some pressure on your eyes while you are under the treatment. It will only be like someone pressing or touching your eyes while they are closed.

The microkeratome is surgical equipment used for LASIK treatment. It is composed of a suction ring which is powered by a vacuum pressure to keep it from moving when it is being used. It also has a blade and a plate along with a motor. This in turn will move the blade over the surface of your eyes. To reshape the tissue of your eyes, the surgeon will be using an excimer laser. This is done after making the flap inside your cornea. This is what the need to do correct your vision. After gently reshaping the corneal tissue, replacing the corneal flap will be the next step. Ten minute is only what it takes for this surgical treatment. But it may take a more time while you have to wait for the surgeon to finish preparing all the equipment he needs for the procedure. Having someone to drive you home after the LASIK surgery is the safe way to go. Your vision will still be a bit blurry from the procedure so it is unsafe to do the driving yourself.

After the surgery, there is a chance your eyes will be dry. The doctor will teach you how to apply eye drops to prevent this from happening. You must do this to avoid infection during the recovery period. To prevent the harsh light from hurting your still sensitive eyes, you are encouraged to use sunglasses days after you have the surgical procedure whenever you go outside. Do this until your eyes have fully healed. Rubbing your eyes could slow down the healing of your corneal flap, try to refrain doing this until they are healed.

Changes from your surgical procedure can be seen within a day after the treatment. Or sometime it could take months. In truth, a good number people by no means acquire the best visual improvements until around six months after the surgical procedure. The doctor will propose a follow-up visit within one to two days after your Lasik surgery, to make sure that the healing and the improvements are progressing as expected and to see the overall health of your eyes.
