Having Lasik Surgery

By Denver Teti

To improve your vision, and to rid yourself of contact lenses and eyeglasses which are cumbersome, it's better to undergo LASIK surgery. The patients who will undergo this surgery are asked to refrain from using their soft contact lenses for three days, and those using hard lenses three weeks. The doctors recommend this because it is needed for the eyes to adjust. Wearing of contact lenses or eyeglasses are allowed to avoid the onset of headaches or to prevent accidents form happening. The patients are asked not to use colognes, lotions, perfumes and other products that may irritate your eyes before going under the surgical treatment. Wearing makeup is also not allowed.

It may take a day after the surgery before you see a noticeable change in your eyesight, but sometimes it can also take months. In reality, some people may spend the next six months after the surgery never getting the best possible visual improvements. On the other hand to guarantee that the healing and the improvements are moving ahead as anticipated, the doctor will suggest a check up a few days after the treatment. He can also check if there is no infection.

Then, to make a very thin flap inside your cornea, the surgeon will use a small medical device known as microkeratome will be surgically placed. The surgical procedure may not hurt because of the anesthesia, but you will still some pressure on your eyes while you are under the treatment. It will only be like someone pressing or touching your eyes while they are closed.

The microkeratome has a blade and a plate along with a motor. This in turn will move the blade over the surface of your eyes. It also has a suction ring which is powered by a vacuum pressure to keep it from moving when it is being used. An excimer laser will be used to reshape the tissue of your eyes; this is done after making the flap inside your cornea. This procedure will correct your vision. Replacing the corneal flap will be the next step after the surgeon gently reshaped the corneal tissue. You may spend more time waiting for the surgeon to finish preparing his equipment for the procedure. But the treatment itself will only take ten minutes most of the time. You must have someone to drive you home after the LASIK surgery. It is most likely that your vision will be blurry after the surgical procedure.

After the surgery, there is a chance your eyes will be dry. The doctor will teach you how to apply eye drops to prevent this from happening. The proper use of eye drops can help keep your eyes from getting infected. To prevent the harsh light from hurting your still sensitive eyes, you are encouraged to use sunglasses days after you have the surgical procedure whenever you go outside. Do this until your eyes have fully healed. Rubbing your eyes could slow down the healing of your corneal flap, try to refrain doing this until they are healed.

To start the procedure, you will be seated on a reclining chair and then an anesthesia will be administered on your eyes. This will minimize any pain or discomfort that you may feel during the surgery. An eye spring will be installed by the surgeon inside your eyes at the start. This is to guarantee that your eyes will remain open during the whole surgical procedure or treatment.
