Lasik for Clear Eye Sight

By Mark D. Stallworth

What can be said about our eyes apart from the fact that they are the most valuable part of us. It is the vision of eyes that allows us to be grateful for the life around us. The power which God has vested in our eyes is the ability to view the uniqueness of our world. Sadly, many of the people are not gifted with good vision and have eye defects wherein they cannot see without the help of spectacles and lenses. Lasik or Eye Laser surgery has definitely changed the face of eye operations and has provided a great option to people with eye defects to see the world through their own eyes.

Lasik surgery has generated hype as it can be used to correct eye defects such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Lasik (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is one of the types of refractive surgery and can be carried out only by skilled eye surgeons by using laser rays. Lasik is a kind of photorefractive keratectomy.

Lasik surgery has gained great recognition worldwide, the main reason being the fact that the surgery is quite painless. Also, patients are able to see immediate effects wherein their vision recovers to normalcy from the second day of surgery which makes people believe in the competence of Lasik surgeries.

The procedure is mostly carried out by analyzing the cornea thickness of the patient's eyes. Microkeratome is the instrument used in Lasik surgery which cuts the cornea to make a circular, thin flap. In the recent surgeries, laser has been utilized to do the same.

Once the flap of the cornea is hinged backwards, the surgeon with the help of excimer laser will remove some of the corneal tissue which is there down below. The use of the excimer laser is that it uses the appropriate percentage of ultraviolet beam to reduce only the required amount of corneal tissue and hence allows the cornea to be reshaped.

The restructuring of the cornea allows clear vision as then the light rays would fall on the wall of the retina. The flap which was made on the cornea will be put back on the position of the removed corneal tissues.

Most of the defects of eye can be treated by Lasik surgery which includes farsighted, nearsighted and astigmatism condition. The nearsighted eyes are cured by decreasing the steepness of the cornea and the farsighted eyes are treated by increasing the steepness of the cornea. Excimer laser can also treat astigmatism by shaping up the irregular cornea to normal size.

The eye doctor who is performing the surgery will certainly give a detailed check-up of your eyes in order to estimate its health. He/she needs to analyze the condition of your eyes, the vision correction you really need and the quantity of laser ablation required to correct your vision. Every eye surgeon before starting the operation will search for dryness in the eyes of the patient. Even if it is not present, the patient should take great care of their eyes after the surgery in order to avoid dryness.

Lasik surgery is a very simple procedure and does not even take five minutes to complete and there is practically no pain. Some of the people regain your normal vision from the very first day but for some people it takes a couple of weeks more. Lasik surgery is the perfect route for people with eye defects to throw away their spectacles and gives them this amazing opportunity to view the world through their very eyes.
